Rebuilding and renovating dilapidated school buildings to create safe, inspiring learning environments.
Many school buildings in rural Nigeria are in severe disrepair: crumbling walls, leaking roofs, and broken furniture. Our School Renovations initiative transforms these spaces into bright, safe, and functional learning environments — because a building is not a detail of education, it is the precondition for it.
Why this work matters
A classroom with a failed roof does not hold lessons in the rainy season. A room without usable furniture means children write on their laps or on the floor. Structural damage closes classrooms entirely, and the pupils are absorbed into whichever rooms remain, at whatever class size results. Teachers are recruited and then lost, because few will stay in a building that is unsafe.
Attendance falls first among the children with the furthest to walk and the least support at home — the pupils least able to absorb the loss.
How the programme works
Assessment with the school
We begin with the head teacher and the school community, because they know which repairs actually unblock teaching. The priority is the work that returns the most classroom time, not the work that photographs best.
Structural repair
Roofing, walls, floors, doors, and windows are addressed first. A weatherproof, secure building protects every subsequent investment.
Furniture and learning environment
Desks, benches, boards, and storage follow, so that a repaired room is a usable room.
Water and sanitation
Where a school lacks safe water or usable toilets, we address it as part of the renovation. Sanitation has a direct and well-documented effect on attendance, particularly for adolescent girls.
Handover and maintenance
Work is handed over to the school and community with maintenance responsibilities agreed, so that a renovated building is still a functioning building several years later.
What your support funds
- Roofing, structural repair, and weatherproofing
- Desks, benches, boards, and classroom furniture
- Safe water points and sanitation facilities
- Learning materials and classroom supplies
- Skilled local labour, which keeps the money in the community doing the work
How we account for it
Each renovation is run as a project with a published budget, scope, and completion status. Donations designated to School Renovations are tracked against those projects and reported in our public donation ledger.
