How a congregation partnership works
A partnership that already works this way
Our community outreach on Buffalo's West Side is run together with Cold Spring Bible Chapel: shared meals, fellowship and practical help for neighbours, with volunteers from both congregations serving side by side.
It did not begin with a formal agreement. It began with a conversation about what a congregation could do that it was not already doing.
What “without proselytizing” means in practice
We are a faith-motivated organization working in communities that are Christian, Muslim and traditional, often in the same village. Our help is never conditional on attending anything, professing anything, or listening to anything first. A family's need is the only thing that determines whether we serve them.
We say this plainly because congregations ask, and because the communities we serve are entitled to know it too. It is also, in the Middle Belt in particular, a practical matter: aid that appears to come with conditions attached is aid that deepens the divisions we are trying to work across.
None of this asks your congregation to be quieter about its faith. It asks that the help itself be offered freely.
What a first conversation covers
Usually four things: how your congregation prefers to give — a designated offering, a seasonal drive, a standing commitment; whether you want to support a particular community or programme or leave it to the greatest need; whether your members want to serve in person, remotely, or through skills such as translation, mentoring or grant writing; and how this fits your calendar, since harvest, Advent, Lent and Easter all suit different kinds of appeal.
About mission trips
Short-term teams do visit our field sites in Nigeria, and we will help you plan a trip that is genuinely useful. We will also tell you honestly when it is not the most useful thing you could do — for some congregations the same budget, given directly, accomplishes considerably more than a week of visitors, and we would rather say so at the start than take the trip and let you work it out afterwards.
Where a team does come, we plan the work with the community beforehand, so visitors join something already underway rather than something arranged for their benefit.
