For decades, families in rural Kebbi State have walked miles each day to fetch water from rivers and ponds shared with livestock. Today, that story is changing.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our field team, two boreholes are now fully operational, providing safe water to over 3,000 people. They are the first two of five planned across the programme.
Clean water doesn't just quench thirst. It means girls can go to school instead of spending hours fetching water. It means mothers spend less time sick. It means communities can focus on farming, business, and education.
"I never imagined I would live to see water come from the ground like this," said Halima, 68, grandmother and village elder. "This is a miracle."
A borehole begins with a survey, not a drill. Placement decides whether a well yields through the dry season or runs empty in the months it is needed most, and getting it wrong wastes the whole investment. Once drilled, the wellhead and apron are built to keep surface run-off out of the supply, and the water is tested before anyone is told to drink it. A borehole that delivers unsafe water is not a finished project.
Across the sector, the most common reason a borehole stops working is not drilling failure. It is that a pump breaks and nobody is responsible for repairing it. Each community therefore forms a water committee, trained in routine maintenance and minor repairs and organising a small maintenance fund, so a fault is fixed locally in days rather than waiting for an outside visit that may not come.
We return to check that pumps are still working and committees are still active, and we report what we find rather than only what we hoped for.
Two of the five boreholes are complete. Three remain to be drilled, and until they are, those communities are still walking to open water.
We count a borehole only once it is drilled, tested and handed over to a trained committee — which is why our impact figures say two, not five. The remaining three are funded gift by gift, and we will report each one as it is delivered.
This work is part of our Borehole & Water Access programme. Gifts fund survey and drilling, pump installation, water testing, and the training that keeps a well running for years. Every designated donation is tracked and published in our public ledger.
