Kano Orphan Home Expansion: Construction Underway

Site update: Foundation complete, wall construction has begun on the new dormitory block.

Construction of the new dormitory block at the Kano orphan home is progressing steadily. With the foundation completed, wall construction is now underway. The expansion will help reduce overcrowding and provide a safer, more comfortable living space for the children.

Why the expansion was needed

Overcrowding is not only a comfort problem. Where children sleep in rooms holding more than they were built for, illness moves quickly between them, older and younger children cannot be given appropriate separate space, and there is nowhere quiet for homework in the evening. Caregivers end up managing the room rather than caring for the children in it.

The existing accommodation had reached the point where taking in another child meant reducing what every other child already had. The dormitory block is what allows the home to say yes again.

Where the work stands

The foundation is complete and wall construction has begun. Roofing, doors and windows follow, then internal finishing, sanitation and furnishing. Work is carried out by local builders, which keeps the spending inside the community doing the labour.

What comes next

Once the structure is weathertight, the priorities are sanitation and sleeping furniture, because a finished building without either is not yet usable. We will publish the completion and the resulting capacity when the block is handed over, rather than announcing it in advance.

How this is funded

This work sits within our Orphan Care programme. Gifts designated to it are tracked against the project and reported in our public donation ledger, so supporters can see the spending rather than take our word for it.
