Enugu Women's Cooperative Initiative
Project Overview
This initiative helps women entrepreneurs in Enugu State organize into formal cooperatives, gain access to microfinance institutions, and receive business development support, creating sustainable income for families. Most of the women in this programme are not short of skill or determination. They are constrained by three things: capital that individual traders cannot raise, markets that are closed to sellers operating alone, and the absence of any structure through which training or finance can reach them. Organising into a cooperative addresses all three at once. Formal cooperatives give members collective purchasing power, which lowers the cost of stock and inputs. They open buyers that will not deal with individual traders. And they create a recognised legal entity, which is often the precondition for a microfinance institution being willing to lend at all. Alongside the cooperative structure, members receive business development support: pricing, margins, record-keeping, and managing stock and cash. These are the skills that decide whether a business survives a difficult month, and they are the ones most often missing when a trade has been learned informally. The intended outcome is a cooperative that continues to operate, borrow, and trade without us. Our role is to help establish it and to step back once it can run on its own. This project sits within our Women Empowerment Programs initiative. Spending is published in our public donation ledger.
